Qatar National Museum

A waterproofing solution adapted to complex shapes for a major international architecture project.

The Qatar Museums Authority has allocated to Hyundai Engineering & Construction a contract of 434 million US $ to build the new National Museum of Qatar. Built around a historical structure, the Fariq Al Salatah palace that housed the heritage museum since 1975, the new National Museum of Qatar has been conceived and designed as an entirely new institution, in accordance with the aspirations that drive QMA. Once complete, the museum, which is prominently located on a 140,000 sqm site at the south end of the Doha ledge, will resemble a desert rose that seems to grow from the ground. It will represent the "past, present, and future" of Qatar.
The waterproofing specifications originally called for bituminous membranes. Considering the complex nature and shapes of vertical surfaces in the form of disks, the builder, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, quickly realised the difficulty in applying bituminous membranes in demanding areas such as the contact points of these disks. They asked Siplast to propose a liquid waterproofing solution taking into account the constraints in terms of stipulated sealing and fire safety.
The timing was perfect for this liquid sealing request because at the same time the Sealoflex company was making its entry into the Icopal Group with its waterproofing liquid technologies. Of the 26 alternative systems thoroughly tested on the market, the Sealoflex solution came out on top. The Sealoflex Pink and Sealoflex Finish Coat products were applied on a surface area of almost 45,000 sqm Foamglas insulating material. The choice of this highly flexible acrylic coating solution has proven particularly suitable for the building envelope with features such as rapid curing and excellent resistance to UV radiation.
